  • Elephant Sands is a bush lodge and campsite in the North-Eastern part of Botswana. We will visit this special place and enjoy viewing the elephants at their natural waterhole right in front of the lodge and campsite. Watch these impressive creatures whilst they drink at only a couple of meters away from you, what an unique experience! There is plenty of other wildlife around as well on their unfenced 16 000ha private conservancy. The lack of fences allows all animals to roam freely.

  • The Pop-Up Gypsy Carnival tented village where Addicted2Adventure.co.za will be staying, is in the Vic Falls town, which means almost everything is within walking distance from the camp site.

    The lovely camp site has:

  • The town

    Victoria Falls is a town in the province of Matabeleland North, Zimbabwe.

     

     

    The Vic Falls

    Victoria Falls on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia is one of Africa’s most iconic destinations and one you do not want to miss.

    The incredibly loud roar of the Zambezi River as it rushes over the cliffs to form the Victoria Falls is guaranteed to take your breath away. The falls are nicknamed Mosi-oa-Tunya; which means ‘The smoke that thunders’, by the locals, due to the billowing clouds of mist that rise up and drench everything and everyone in its reach when the river is in flood.

     

    Sheer size of the falls

    Stretching across 1 708 metres with a height of 108 metres the falls are the world’s largest uninterrupted sheet of falling water with between 20 000 to 500 000 cubic metres of water falling per minute into the Batoka Gorge below.

    The falls are approximately twice the height of the Niagra Falls in North America and twice the width of Horseshoe Falls and their height and width are only rivalled by the Iguazu Falls in South America.

     

    A World Heritage Site

    The Victoria Falls are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are actually made up of 7 different waterfalls. There are two islands at the top of the falls; named Boaruka Island and Livingstone Island that are large enough to cause the water to divide and part.

    The spray from the falls can be seen over 20 metres away and is responsible for sustaining the tropical ‘rainforest’ that is found opposite the falls.

    On the Zimbabwe side visitors can explore the series of paths that twist and wind in and out of the surrounding rainforest where extensive views of the main falls can be seen from numerous vantage points.

    On the Zambian side of the falls, the Knife-Edge bridge allows visitors to walk incredibly close to the cascading falls while a footpath leads you steeply down to the Boiling Pot whirlpool below.

    A truly African landscape, the area surrounding the falls is astonishingly beautiful with a wide variety of endemic plants, a massive array of wildlife and multitude of bird species all found in close proximity.

     

    Named after…

    Rich in culture and history the Victorian Falls take their name from the explorer and missionary; David Livingstone. David Livingstone was the first European to view the falls in 1855 and named them after the British queen at the time; Queen Victoria.

  • Camp site on private island in Zambia

    The beautiful Zambezi river is running around this small island… it’s like in a movie! You can only access the island by mocoro boats (traditional wooden boats) which will be arranged by Addicted2Adventure.

    The ‘facilities’ on the island:

    • 4 x open air palm 2-bed huts: elevated from the ground, ‘grass walls & roof’, open front overlooking the Zambezi river (1^st come > 1^st served)
    • 1 x 2-bed treehouse (1^st come > 1^st served)
    • 2-Man tents, 2 single stretchers, 2 Foldable camping mattresses
    • Open air ‘boma’ area where meals will be prepared on open fire
    • Open kitchen area with cupboards, a table, cooler boxes (filled with limited ice on a daily basis) and cutlery

    Botswana

    Botswana, a landlocked country in Southern Africa, has a landscape defined by the Kalahari Desert and the Okavango Delta, which becomes a lush animal habitat during the seasonal floods. The massive Central Kalahari Game Reserve, with its fossilized river valleys and undulating grasslands, is home to numerous animals including giraffes, cheetahs, hyenas and wild dogs.

    Zambia

    Zambia, in southern Africa, is a landlocked country of rugged terrain and diverse wildlife, with many parks and safari areas. On its border with Zimbabwe is famed Victoria Falls – indigenously called Mosi-oa-Tunya, or “Smoke That Thunders” – plunging a misty 108m into narrow Batoka Gorge. Spanning the Zambezi River just below the falls is Victoria Falls Bridge, a spectacular viewpoint.

    Zimbabwe

    Zimbabwe is a landlocked country in southern Africa known for its dramatic landscape and diverse wildlife, much of it within parks, reserves and safari areas. On the Zambezi River, Victoria Falls make a thundering 108m drop into narrow Batoka Gorge, where there’s white-water rafting and bungee-jumping. Downstream are Matusadona and Mana Pools national parks, home to hippos, rhinos and birdlife.

• More to know

  • Passports are required to enter Botswana, Zambia & Zimbabwe: South African passport holders do not require visas (subject to change without prior notice, please check with you embassy). If you hold any other passport please check beforehand if you require a visa. Visas can be obtained through your local embassy. Ensure that your passport has a minimum of 3 empty pages at the back, is still valid for 6 months on day of crossing the border and is in a good condition
  • The currency in Botswana is the Pula, in Zambia the Kwacha and in Zimbabwe the US Dollar BUT the Rand is normally accepted at most places. Credit card facilities are scarce but accepted and ATM’s are available in Vic Falls town, Zimbabwe. Note: this is Africa! Due to the amount of people during this festive season, the ATM’s might run empty, please ensure that you have enough cash on you in case of this happening. Also take at least 2 different bank cards as sometimes some cards doesn’t want to work…and then you’re stuck! Please inform your bank/s that you will be travelling out of the country so they don’t flag your card as a possible fraud case and freeze it.
  • We will stop at filling stations en route which will be discussed prior to departure
  • International roaming should be set up on your cell phone at least one week before we depart – we have to be able to get hold of you in case you get lost
  • There are usually police road blocks en route, please make sure that you have your driver’s license and that your car documentation are up to date
  • Under normal conditions a 4×4 is not needed to get to Vic Falls. However there is a 200m drive on the sand to Elephant Sands in Botswana, this will require your vehicle to have a higher clearance than a sedan

  • Any alcohol and food products should be hidden when crossing the border
  • Please note: this trip is into Africa. The island, as well as Elephant Sands, are based in Mother Nature, we expect you to be cautious at all times as the game wonders everywhere.
  • Zambia is a malaria area, please be aware and take the appropriate precautions. Please take your own basic medical aid kit
  • It is your responsibility to check with your local embassy if any vaccinations are required to enter any of the countries you will visit. Please get this in time.
  • It is very important that your vehicle is in a good condition and that it has been serviced as this is a long road and there are not many vehicle services companies en route or open during this holiday season. Please take out the necessary insurance for your vehicle, especially since you will be travelling in other countries

  If you want to cross the borders (between South Africa/Botswana/Zimbabwe/Zambia – this is what you need with you:

  • Police road blocks are a common occurrence. Please make sure that you have your driver’s license at hand, that your cars’ license disk is up to date and that your car is equipped with the compulsory items such as warning triangles, fire extinguishers, ZA stickers on the back of your vehicle and trailer etc. Consult with your local outdoor shop ie. Outdoor Warehouse for advice and purchasing of items. Do remember that you are a guest in these countries and that a bit of courtesy and respect will get you a long way.   • Advice – we’re talking out of experience here: make certified copies of all of the above documents and ask one of your travel friends to each keep it safe with them in case you should lose your file. Also bring a spare car key and ask someone in your travel party in a different vehicle to keep it in their safety – you don’t wanna be stuck in another country or just far away from home because you lost your key!
